K.I. Sawyer Air Base

Updated: Aug 3, 2020

Our second Harvest Host stop of the trip was to K.I. Sawyer Air Base. It is located about 20 miles from Marquette, and serves as the airport for Marquette MI (MQT). We loved this stop, it had airplanes and a big parking lot what could be better?

I spy an airplane!

The air force base was active for almost 40 years and closed around 1995. They have an aviation museum that is open a few days a week that had some really interesting exhibits, and as a bonus the gentleman who was staffing it the day we were there had actually worked and lived there when it was operational.

The A&P in my husband loved this.

This was a great stop for the aviation buff!

While my husband loved the aviation aspect of it, as an avid X-Files fan who grew up watching the X-Files, I was fascinated by the fact that it was an old air force base that I could walk around. It was creepy, cool, and sad all at the same time. At the height of the base there were about 10,000 people here, now there are about 2-3000 depending on the stats you look at, either way it is a large decrease in the population.

Panoramic of the old bank (there were two old banks).

What I am assuming is the old grocery store.

Not exactly a usable drive thru anymore.

Old Housing perhaps.

I spy a Maddie Bus!

Overall this was a fantastic stop with amazing history and I would highly recommend it.
