Bridge on the way to Copper Harbor
This was our northern most stop, the campground was 10 miles south of Copper Harbor in Lac La Belle. The Copper Harbor area so far has been my absolute favorite stop up here to date. The only downfall is the lack of campgrounds that Maddie can fit it, it gets worse the further north you go. I spent hours and hours researching places looking at them online and on google maps and satellites to check and see if we would fit. Most places I could pass on easily as they usually stated less then 40 feet or in one case I saw a "less the 32 feet." The other one I saw that I thought we *might* fit had no hookups of any kind, and while "boondocking" for a day or two is fine anything more then 4 days becomes a stretch for us. I was so ecstatic to find Wilderness Resort! A site that had full hookups and we could fit. I made my husband call and talk to the owner just to double check we would be ok, because on the website it is very clear that they want all your stuff to fit on the site and you should book an extra site if it won't. Since I want to be a good camper and be allowed back I had him call and explain we had a tow car and a tow dolly and to make sure it would fit in the site that I wanted (the one with full hookups). The guy he talked to was great and said it would be no problem.
Kind of cool to drive though the old brick street downtown
The drive up there was pretty and a little challenging going through Houghton and Hancock. There is no "big rig bypass" so we got to drive through the old downtown with brick streets and people parallel parked on both sides, plus the cool old bridge!
Scenic drive up to the campground
Once free of the two towns (one on each side of the river) it was smooth sailing up to Lac La Belle and beautiful scenery. It's always a little unnerving going down small side roads to campgrounds because it's not as if we can just turn around if we miss a turn, but thankfully no missed turns and we arrived at the campground.
Pulling into the Wilderness Resort
The campground was great very small with only about 20 sites, they had a few big sites but mostly smaller ones. The gentleman my husband talked to wasn't there that day (it's a husband/wife team that run it I think) but the wife was there and a little concerned when she saw Maddie. Her concern was not unfounded as apparently a few days earlier someone with a brand new Class A motor home took down the stop sign getting in and hit one of the other posts, so she was understandable concerned about us getting in. My husband and I have a good system when parking Maddie in a new place (esp small/gravel road ones like this). First we stopped by the front desk to check in which was easy lots of room to park right there while we assessed the campground, this is was also where we unhooked the car. Our system to approaching tighter campgrounds is to walk the entire route before we even start to drive, this is clearly a hold over from walking cross country courses when riding, but it also works well with hubby's planning ahead personality. This is a combo effort as we both see different obstacles and hubby points out to me where he wants me to watch certain things, parked trucks, posts, etc. After spending a good ten minutes assessing the campground and picking the best path we started up Maddie and off we went with me walking next to her with hubby was driving. It actually was a pretty easy campground and we didn't have to wiggle at all to back in the site, planning ahead does help. The lady who checked us in was impressed and happy we didn't hit anything so it was a success! This was a great campground and a great jumping off point for exploring Copper Harbor!
All set up!
